What Are ACL injuries?

The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is one of the key stabilizing ligaments inside the knee. It plays a vital role in supporting the knee during high-speed, dynamic movements like cutting, pivoting, jumping, and landing – common in many sports. ACL injuries typically occur during athletic activities when the knee is twisted or forced into a sudden change in direction.

At Big Cat Performance & Physical Therapy, we’ve helped hundreds of athletes navigate the ACL recovery process. We’re specialists in ACL rehab, and we understand not only the physical demands of recovery but also the emotional and mental challenges that come with it. For many athletes, an ACL tear isn’t just a physical injury – it’s a major disruption to their sport, training, and identity.

What Are The Symptoms Of ACL Injuries?

ACL injuries are often dramatic and unmistakable when they happen. Athletes may feel or hear a “pop” in the knee, followed by immediate swelling, instability, and difficulty bearing weight. However, even after surgery, many athletes experience setbacks that aren’t as obvious – loss of strength, limited mobility, and a lingering fear of reinjury.

Unfortunately, the statistics surrounding ACL recovery paint a sobering picture:

  • 10–25% of individuals will re-tear their ACL after surgery.
  • Over 55% never return to their pre-injury level of sport.
  • Many give up on their sport altogether – or worse, tear the opposite ACL due to compensatory imbalances.

These outcomes are often due to generic rehab programs that don’t go deep enough into strength recovery, movement analysis, or sport-specific progressions. Without a targeted plan, athletes risk returning too soon, underprepared, and vulnerable to another injury.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing/Treating ACL Injuries Pain?

At Big Cat, we take a different path. Our ACL rehab program is athlete-centered, results-driven, and rooted in performance science. Unlike traditional clinics, where post-surgical rehab might happen in a cramped room with minimal equipment, we work out of fully equipped performance gyms. From the first day of rehab, our clients feel like athletes – because they are.

Our process begins with one-on-one sessions with a Doctor of Physical Therapy who specializes in ACL recovery. Every treatment is personalized and progression-based, happening in an environment built for movement. Whether you’re learning to contract your quad post-surgery or training for return to sport, we use high-level strength equipment, turf space, and performance tools to match your rehab to your goals.

What really sets us apart is our rigorous objective testing. We don’t guess. We measure. From quad strength assessments to return-to-sport testing, we gather real data to track your progress and make smart, safe decisions. These metrics help us reduce your risk of re-tear far below industry norms – one of the things we’re most proud of.

The goal? To help you come back stronger than before – mentally and physically – and with the confidence to perform without fear.
